I’ve been blogging for years, but the big bucks? Still waiting on that—brutal, I know. Sticking with it isn’t always easy, but here I am, still at it. Will I quit? Maybe. But for now, my reasons to keep going outweigh the doubts. Honestly, I’m falling in love with blogging all over again.
It’s not just about passion anymore—it’s about everything I’ve gained along the way. So, here’s my article, where I share what blogging has given me and a few other unexpected lessons.

Blogging is a Tool for Self & Career Development
Chasing dreams, overcoming challenges, and making an impact all sound great, but they don’t mean much until you take action. The real game-changer? Learning how to harness those strengths and turn them into something real.
1. An Outlet to Express Your Thoughts and Emotions
Before blogging, journaling was my go-to for managing stress and processing emotions. It helped me reflect, clear my mind, and find balance.
Blogging is similar—but with a creative twist. Unlike journaling, it pushes you to refine your thoughts, making them clearer and more engaging. For me, it’s been a game-changer. Instead of ranting, I’ve learned to frame my thoughts in a way that sparks conversation. Rather than dwelling on negativity, I ask questions and share insights, creating space for readers to connect, reflect, and grow.
2. Improve your communication, especially writing skills
Blogging is a powerful way to level up your communication, especially in writing. Moreover, blogging also helps you discover your unique writing style and voice. That’s what makes it so fulfilling—it’s your signature way of expressing ideas, something no one (not even AI) can truly replicate.

I’m still a work in progress, but I know my writing has come a long way. If I weren’t a blogger, my skills in writing, research, and editing would be far more limited.
3. Boost Your Social and Interpersonal Skills
Blogging has opened doors to connections beyond my usual circle. Attending events pushed me out of my comfort zone, and over time, I started enjoying the scene. I got more comfortable networking with fellow creators, PR pros, and industry insiders.
The best part? Content creators come from all walks of life, and many are surprisingly generous with their knowledge. Funny enough, the first person who taught me about SEO and blog monetization wasn’t even in marketing—it was a nursing or engineering student I met at iBlog.

4. Grow Your Network & Get the Support You Need
Blogging has unexpectedly helped me in my offline ventures more times than I can count. I remember scrambling to gather important materials for work, reaching out to former colleagues with no luck. And guess who ended up saving the day? A fellow blogger I had only met once or twice. Some of the best resources I use for my home-based business also came straight from my blogging connections.
5. Get Comfortable Learning & Interviewing Others
One of the perks of being an active blogger? Event invites. I’ve had the chance to attend gatherings with celebrities, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. When I go, I make the most of it—I ask questions, interview professionals, and soak up insights. You never know what valuable lessons or inspiration you might uncover, not just for yourself but for others who need to hear them, too.

6. Blogging as a Sustainable Income Stream
I won’t discuss the usual ways to monetize a blog—things like placing ads, accepting sponsored posts, or joining affiliate programs. Instead, I will explain how blogging can be a long-term, sustainable income source.
For starters, it can be a full-fledged career or a stepping stone to more stable job opportunities (which I’ll dive into in the next points). Beyond that, blogging helps build a strong online presence—whether for a personal brand or a business, digital or not.
Here’s a friendly reality check: Over the years, I’ve seen bloggers thrive, and I’ve seen others quit entirely. Those who succeeded didn’t just stick to content creation; they used their blogging skills to land better job opportunities or even grow their side hustle into a full-blown business.
On the other hand, many who quit relied solely on blogging as their main source of income. The truth? It takes months—sometimes years—to earn consistently, and with so many content creators across different platforms, it’s even tougher now.
Instead of chasing social media fame (create content for the sake of doing it), focus on honing your skills and building a business with real-world value. As Carlo Ople of Unbox Group puts it: Create something that actually matters.
“Influencers and creators should realize that they don’t own the social media platforms they’re making a “living” out of. One day you can have millions of followers and views, the next day you’re banned and have no more community to easily connect with.”
7. Showcase Your Expertise & Get Noticed in Your Industry
Some professions require work samples to showcase skills and expertise. These days, plenty of online portfolio platforms make it easy to display your work. You can also create your own website using platforms like WordPress or Wix. Whatever you choose, strong blogging skills help you effectively communicate your value and accomplishments.
So, who benefits the most from having an online portfolio?
- Those in creative fields, including photographers, makeup artists, graphic designers, architects, web designers and developers, writers, videographers, video editors, and filmmakers, animators, artists, and interior designers
- Those in tech fields: software developers, UX/UI designers, and data scientists
- Professionals in the fields of marketing, public relations, media/ journalism, and education
By the way, if you’re interested in creating your own online portfolio, blog, or business website, I personally use Hostinger as my web host. I first heard about it through recommendations from fellow bloggers and tech-savvy colleagues.
I stick with Hostinger because it’s affordable and user-friendly (even for non-techies like me), and their customer and tech support teams are incredibly helpful. They even managed my website migration from my old host! One of my favorite perks of having my own site? A professional company email—yep, I now have an @hoshilandia.com email. 8. Get Hands-On Experience in Content Writing, Copywriting & Other Skills
If there’s one in-demand job that goes hand in hand with blogging, it’s content writing. A quick look at job sites will tell you that companies hire people with blogging and content-writing skills. Why? Because almost every website and social media platform relies on written content. Ads, business copies, and company manuals—they all require strong writing. Job titles may change, and requirements may evolve, but bloggers can transition into content writers or copywriters.

But blogging doesn’t just sharpen your writing skills. It exposes you to a wide range of skills that can lead to careers in:
- SEO Specialist
- Social Media Manager
- Email Marketing Specialist
- Affiliate Marketer
- Content Strategist
- Brand Manager
- Community Manager
- Web Content Manager
- UX Writer
- Graphic Designer
I’ve met and worked with fellow bloggers who have successfully transitioned into these roles. Blogging isn’t just a creative outlet—it’s a launchpad for bigger career and business opportunities.
9. Stay Ahead in Digital Marketing & Build Your Online Business
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard questions like, Is blogging still relevant? or Does it even matter anymore?
If earning money or boosting your professional development isn’t a strong enough answer, here’s a better question to ask:
- Why is blogging important in digital marketing?
- Why is blogging essential for businesses?
It’s a core part of digital marketing, especially content marketing. Businesses across industries depend on it to strengthen their websites, social media, and overall online presence. Of course, blogging gives businesses an edge, especially in online selling, e-commerce, or dropshipping.
A blog page helps build brand awareness, credibility, and thought leadership. It’s also a great tool for educating customers and generating leads.

Blogging Helps You Grow While Helping Others
10. How Blogging Helps You Thrive & Drive Positive Change
One of the main reasons I started blogging was to share my insights and opinions—many of which I’ve gained through research, interviews, and personal experience. Having worked across different industries, I’ve picked up valuable knowledge that would be a waste if left unshared.
Blogging also allows me to:
- Educate others. Many people want to learn but don’t know where to start. Not everything is taught in schools or found in books. That’s also why I blog in Filipino—to break down educational barriers and make learning more accessible.
- Raise awareness. Important causes, research findings, and social issues deserve more attention. A blog post can reach beyond your social media circle, helping more people discover valuable information.
Personally, I advocate for education, financial literacy, media and information literacy, and Philippine arts and culture. Some of these advocacies have already been featured on Hoshilandia. Blogging isn’t just a platform for self-expression—it’s a powerful tool to educate, inspire, and drive change.
Ilan sa na-publish na advocasy sa Hoshilandia ay

- Save Thresher Sharks campaign
- Rebuild Philippines Project of Habitat for Humanity
- Rebuilding Visayas Cultural Heritage Structures
- Taboan: Philippine Literature Festival
11. Build a Community Around Your Passion or Purpose
When you consistently share insights, experiences, and valuable content, you naturally attract people who share your interests. Through comments, social media, and collaborations, you start forming a network of like-minded individuals—people who are eager to learn, share, and support one another.
Over time, they become more than just an audience. They evolve into a real community that inspires, influences, and even creates opportunities for collaborations, advocacy work, or business ventures.
Just sharing—I used to feel out of place because my interests were so diverse—and not exactly popular among my relatives, classmates, or coworkers. However, when I started attending seminars and conferences like WordCamp, that changed. I realized I wasn’t alone. No matter where people come from or their background, shared passions and goals have a way of bringing them together.
12. Share Honest Reviews and Recommendations
Authentic reviews and recommendations are valuable no matter the platform—I even check Quora and Reddit myself. But blogging offers more freedom, control, and long-term benefits since your site is your own media space.
Take my movie reviews, for example. I combine objective analysis with personal insights to help readers know what to expect, what matters, and what they can take away from a film. In turn, these reviews can benefit moviegoers, filmmakers, and even the industry as a whole.
13 Build Your Legacy Through Your Digital Presence
Early on, I wrote articles I can barely remember the context of—probably out of excitement, curiosity, or just being in the writing flow. Looking back, some lacked depth or long-term value, but I don’t regret those “nonsense” days. That phase shaped me, and my blog has always been my space for self-expression.

Over time, I became more intentional about what I post. I focus on creating content I’m proud of—something that entertains, informs, and inspires. Hoshilandia isn’t just a blog; it’s a digital footprint that reflects my journey and legacy.
A strong digital presence builds credibility and authority. Credibility doesn’t happen overnight, and words alone aren’t enough—you need proof. People—whether recruiters, investors, institutions, or clients—seek someone they can trust. Nowadays, hiring managers even check online profiles before making decisions. So let your blog showcase not just your skills but also your values, goals, and who you truly are.
